The Stupidity of Fraternity

Another student is dead.

Cris Anthony Mendez was suspected to have died because of hazing in this Inquirer report.

His death, suspected to be the result of hazing, cut short his Friendster run.

I have expressed before how pointless these fraternities are. I don’t give a crap whatever these so-called organizations claim to accomplish or contribute to society. We have countless other organizations that do the same thing, but do not get their members pointlessly killed.

The concept of undergoing initiation to prove commitment to the group still eludes me. What eludes me more is the point of their continuous existence right within school premises. I understand that we have the right to convene and express our ideologies. But when people die senselessly in the process of joining, then we have a problem. A big one.

Again, the Anti-Hazing law seems to bear no meaning to these idiots who continue to engage in these illegal activities of fraternities.

Non-weekend

Weekend work sucks, but a necessity.

The 40-hour or so workweek doesn’t cut it anymore. The trick is to find a work that’s less stressful (or fun!) and quite (or totally!) different from your regular work. That way, working in a general sense wouldn’t feel non-ending and suffocating.

It would seem that many of your unfulfilled hopes and dreams have led to uncertainty and suspicion. You no longer wish to answer to others and you are insisting on freedom of thought. You feel that you are fully self-sufficient and can control your own destiny. You are seeking ways to protect yourself from further loss of prestige and against further setbacks. You have become very dependent and you doubt that matters could possibly get any better in the immediate future and this negative attitude is leading you to exaggerate your claims and to refuse reasonable compromise.

You wish to be left in peace… no more conflict and no more differences of opinion. In fact you just don’t want to be involved in arguments of any shape or form. All you want is for ‘them’ to get on with it – and to leave you alone.

A bit too broad, yet somewhat true. This should do for now.

Absenteeism

In this news item in Inquirer, Rep. Teodoro Locsin defends chronic absentees in the House of Representatives.

Locsin rose to defend alleged absentee House members. They include Negros Occidental Rep. Julio Ledesma, Capiz Rep. Fredenil Castro and Mountain Province Rep. Victor Dominguez who were reported to have attended only three out of the first 10 sessions.

He also cites that organization of committees isn’t finalized yet and that there are no bills to work upon yet .

That’s just outrageous!

You mean to tell me that a month after they have convened, they still haven’t accomplished anything? Hmm. Well, I wouldn’t really care if they’re present or not, unless they’re getting paid already.

But then, according to the same article, members are required to attend the sessions even if there aren’t any bills to be discussed.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, however, argued that House rules mandate members to attend sessions whether or not there are bills to tackle.

If attendance is mandated, then there shouldn’t be an excuse for not attending sessions now, is there? If we can’t count on these representative to follow a very simple rule of attendance, how are we to trust that they truly know the other rules that they need to abide by as public officials. We’ve seen them chase their own tails on technicalities time and again. They waste their time (and the people’s tax money!) debating on interpretation of  written rules. Sheesh.

It’s still apparent that some of them don’t really know what they got themselves into. They just managed to win the election, hoping that they figure out how the game is played without thorough knowledge of its rules.

And that’s short-changing the people.

I don’t get it sometimes.

The peso continues to appreciate against the dollar and yet, you have businesses complaining about it.

A 12-peso wage increase is granted and again, you have minimum wage earners highly unsatisfied by the change.

It seems to me that the difficulty of achieving contentment seems to bring into foreground how much and how long the general public is being deprived of the “good stuff” that suits one’s perceived level of comfort.
