Pluto Demoted

Here’s an interesting news from CNN.

After much debate at conference in Prague, astronomers have declared that Pluto is no longer a planet, cutting down the “planets” of the solar system from nine to eight. From now on, it will fall under the “dwarf planet” category.

Much-maligned Pluto doesn’t make the grade under the new rules for a planet: “a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a … nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.”

Pluto is automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune’s. [CNN]

Nice. This is man trying to play god. We don’t get to create planets, but at least we get to label, promote, and demote them.

Pero, maapaektuhan kaya ang aking mga horoscopes?

2nd Impeachment Complaint Finale

The House of Representative upheld the previous decision of the House Committee on Justice. The opposition needed 1/3 of the House or 77 votes to pass the complaint for trial by the Senate. If it were a basketball game, I’d say tambak sobra yung opposition.

Francis Escudero said in this Inquirer article:

“You thought you won, but history will say who’s right or wrong,” said Escudero. “Although we lost, the result of the voting will not twist the truth about cheating, lying, anomalies and stealing in the government in the past years.”

Well, sir, that will all depend on who’s writing the history.

There’s always next year. Assuming, of course, that we still have the same system of govenment by then.

Dead Fishes

My little sister’s pet fishes died today.

My mom says she doesn’t know why they died. She just saw the two gold fishes and the black one sort of floating. The dead fishes weren’t trown away. Are you supposed to throw them away? Or bury them? Hmm. I guess it depends on my little sister since they’re her pets.

I wonder how she’ll take the news. She’s not that young anyway – she’ll eight in two months – but it’s hard to tell if this has any effect on her.

When I was a kid, we would actually bury dead pets in the backyard then we’d put a couple of leaves to serve as burial flowers. And there was this particular dog na iniyakan ko talaga because I was at a school activity when he died and was buried. After finding about it when I got home, I went to my room and just cried. Really sad.

Anyway, a dying pet is just part of the whole experience of taking care of pets.

Everytihng has to go at some time or another.

2nd Impeachment Complaint

From Inquirer today

IN ANOTHER KILLING, President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo’s dominant allies threw out yesterday a second attempt to unseat her in two years. The House committee on justice voted 56-24 to trash the impeachment complaint backed by civil society.

The House Committee on Justice threw out the 8th impeachment complaint filed by the Black and White Movement, after determining that the 7 initial complaints were submitted even before the one-year ban of the previous complaint had elapsed.

I don’t get it. I’m not exactly a GMA fan nor am I for the opposition, but I think the people – we! – have the right to know the truth about the allegations made in the impeachment complaint.

And the only way to determine the truth and the lies, I think, is via due process. Not thru surveys, nor media showdowns, nor political bickerings on national television.

This political exercise would have been the most appropriate opportunity and venue for the issues to be settled. Sigh.

Well, were all the enumerated complaints really defective? Some may not be outright factual, but I’m pretty sure there were allegations that deserved to be addressed.

If 56 members of the House Committee on Justice “think” that the impeachment complaint is insufficient in substance, then that’s that. Or is it?
I liked this quote from Deputy Majority Leader Edcel Lagman:

Lagman said that while the complaint was “oozing with propaganda, it is parched in substance; while it is replete with innuendos, it is destitute of ultimate facts; it has a surfeit of generalizations but a dearth of specifications; it is a recital of self-serving conclusions of facts and law, not a recital of facts constituting the offense charged and determinative of the jurisdiction of the committee.”

I wonder how many times he pressed Shift+F7. Ilang beses kaya nya pinractice yung linya na yun? 😛

Terrorist Plot Foiled

Just want to note this thwarted terror plot that involves blowing up airplanes. Again. This time, however, it involves the United Kingdom.

UPDATE: Initial reports from CNN and BBC can be read here and here.

Arrests have been made by the UK’s Scotland Yard concerning a terrorist plot. The plan was to blow up a number of airplanes while in flight between the United Kingdom and the United States. Currently there are no reports as to who or what group is behind the plan.

Security level has been raised by the British Home Office (their version of the US’s Homeland Security) to “critical” which means that the threat was very real. Airport security in all of the airports in UK has been tightened. Some flights into UK are cancelled. London’s Heathrow airport is currently closed to most flight within that region. Passengers are being hand-searched and all baggage are being inspected.

New traveling security measures include banning carrying hand luggage and, interestingly enough, liquids such as beverages and lotions in any flights. These are probably the materials were intended to be used for the plot. Only very important items like traveling documents are allowed to be carried by passengers.

Anyways, it’s pretty difficult to get into CNN and BBC websites right now. More reports will probably start pouring in the next few hours or so.

So if you’re traveling to any of those countries anytime soon, do expect some delays. I’m sure your patience and cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

Don’t Abused our OFWs

Short entry.

I read this report in Manila Standard saying that at least 8 of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) evacuated from Lebanon are suffering from mental illness. Although they say that it was induced by the war, a number of them have suffered ill treatment under their employers.

I think, A LOT of our OFWs not only in the middle east but across the world are suffering the different kinda of ill treatment from their employers. The government may have taken steps in promoting our workers as “diligent and competent workers,” yet it is clear that something needs to be done about abusive employers.

We need a program that looks into the our OFWs once in a while to check their living conditions and to take necessary diplomatic actions to address ill-treatment. Their remittances have contributed much to our country’s economy and I think they deserve to be educated about their rights, and be protected and guarded well-enough by the Philippine embassy in the country where they are working.

One little bright spot of the war is that the conflict has brought some of them the opportunity to return back to the Philippines, when they had none before.

Then again, if we can’t protect workers’ rights here,
pano pa kaya yung mga nasa ibang bansa.

Mayon Volcano

In other news, Mayon Volcano is expected to erupt very soon. Villagers near the possible path destruction are being evacuated. As expected, it’s no easy task to ask them to leave their houses. Let’s hope they cooperated with government volunteers for their own safety. At any rate, it is reported that both local and national government agencies are working full time in preparation for the eruption.

I, on the other hand, wish to be there with a camera when Mayon erupts. If it’s going to be as explosive as Philvolcs say, then it’s going to be a pretty show by mother nature.

In light of the recent major earthquakes in Indonesia, I hope this eruption would be the “worst” that could happen to our little area in the ring fire.
